ANOTHER 5 Things That You Don't Know About Me.....

1. I am a notorious garbage picker, much to the kids dismay. Shawn and I actually got our washing machine from the side of the road last year. It was less than 3 years old, and it was being tossed away because it was missing a button. We don't have a car, so we brought it home on a skate board. We just slapped it on the skateboard and rolled it across one of the busiest streets in the city.

2. My father, a swinging single guy in the 70's, dated my grade 3 teacher, Miss M. I had her for grades 3, 4, and 5. They dated secretly for awhile, and when they broke up, she tried to have me held back. I remember going to a meeting at the school, but it wasn't until just shortly before my Dad passed away that he told me the whole truth. Miss M was angry at being dumped, and tried to fail me because of it. We had to go before the school board and she came close to being fired. I made it to the next grade, but Miss M was always so hard on me. Now I know why. Thanks, Dad.

3. I had a made up boyfriend in grade 6. (Think Jan Brady and George Glass). His name was Christopher, and of course, he was SOOOO cute. I am so embarrassed.

4. I introduced my best friend, Heidi, to her hubby, Jethro, a childhood friend that I have known since I was 10. This means that between them, Heidi and Jethro know pretty much everything that there is to know about me. Scary thought.

5. I accidentally wore my pants to college in side out one day. I had been really sick, and had rushed out the door to make my bus. I made it half way through the morning before anyone noticed. I could have died, I was that embarrassed. I didn't rush to the bathroom to change, however. I waited until our next break, and chastized everyone that was laughing at me for not being able to think 'outside of the box.'

No reason to be embarrassed! Not only have I accepted an Oscar for best original screen play but I came back the following year to accept the Oscar for best picture, and of course all of this happened last week, while I was turning computers on at work.

He looked exactly like Christopher Atkins.

I was just thinking about that introduction thing the other day. You realize how long ago that was???? This is a big year y'know.

Nothing wrong with picking up a washer that still works...although sounds a little dangerous with the skateboard!

I never had a made-up boyfriend....I'm sure some of the other girls at school did!

Inside out? Well, not with pants but do that with shirts all the time!

Good find on the washing machine. You can really find some cool things at yard-sales and flea markets. It’s true that one person’s garbage is another person’s gold. I have to draw the line, though, at buying used underwear and vibrators at yard sales. No telling where they’ve been.

You’re lucky to have Heidi as a friend for so long. I have not seen any of my school classmates (except one whom I dated before I married Sweet Tea) since graduation. I didn’t like them then, so why would I want to see them now. The oldest friends I have I met in the Navy and they live in Chicago, Texas and South Georgia. And they don’t blog.

Corky - Then you know what I'm talking about!

Heidi - Not EXACTLY like Christopher Atkins, but....20 years already? WOW. Thank goodness for Last Chance Highschool. It brought us all together.

Snowcrush - Not dangerous, but definetely something to see! The whole made up boyfriend thing? Honestly, he was one of the best boyfriends that I ever had.

Coffeypot - I actually know someone that buys used socks and underwear for her kids. She has to have bingo money, and it doesn't grow on trees.
Jethro and I have been friends forever. He used to be the best friend of 2 of my brothers, but now he's more like a brother to me.
Heidi and I met in grade 9 in English class. We failed math that year, together. I spent more time writing short stories than I did doing math. Those were the days...We have been friends ever since. I coulsn't imagine my life without her or Jethro.....

Great stuff! Your dad sounds like he was a real piece of work.

whimsical - My dad was a sweetie, really. He dated ALOT during the 70's but never had anyone over when I was home. I guess that my teacher was a pretty serious girlfriend for him...So weird, though. Like I said, it all makes sense to me now! She was so good to me for awhile. She gave me oranges at recess, and bought me ribbons for my hair. Then, BAM, I'm failing? UGH. I am STILL so grossed out. YUCK.

Heidi the Hick said...

Do you have any idea how much of Grade 9 math I've blocked out? I don't even remember where I sat or where you sat or what room it was in.

Good times man. Good times.

Biddie said...

Heidi- I remember some of it. You sat in front of me. We failed. Alot. We did have some great times,tho...Was Mr. Burns our teacher? We were on the 1st floor, I think. If it would havebeen any higher, I might have tried to jump out of the window. GAWD, I hated math.

garbage picker? some'at I haven't tried. at last. I'll report back

Heidi the Hick said...

Yep, Steven's right. We'll mess you up big time. Did I really sit right in front of you? My god, I remember you being there but that's it. No details. Just that frog faced teacher. Burn.

Anyways, I don't really know all there is to know because I didn't know the inside out pants story. But I do now.....!

And keep in mind I tend to forget stuff, so you're pretty much safe.

Garbage picking is grand idea. You might call it freecycling. The idea that you are putting to use what somebody else does not need any more. There is even Freecycle where you exchange goods with others in your community. There are worldwide divisions of this organization.

Steve - It's true, she really could. Jethro knew me when I was a scabby kneed, pop bottle glasses wearing, Sunday school teaching dork. Sad, but true.

Drunk Punk - It's so much fun, truthfully. I love it, and it mortifies the kids...2 birds with one stone !!

Heidi - You're much too kind to blab...unless it's funny, in which case I don't mind..much...

MJD - I love the Freecycle idea! I love the idea of saving money, that I don't have, and helping the environment doesn't bother me, either. Thanks for the info, and good to see you again!

can you find me a washer, seeing as i went to buy one in the sales and spent the money on a holiday!

Camie Vog said...

My hubby has taught me the finer points of garbage picking. These are the things in our house that he has collected.

Two lamps, an oak dining table, a oak bench seat that goes around the dining table...the seats even lift up and you can store stuff in it. A oak file cabinet, carpet (which was new), our side tables near the couch, and the table that we put our mail on, oh, and this two seater couch that I really hate. No one sits on it except for the cat. I plan on buying a new couch or chair to replace it once we get caught up on some bills.

Biddie said...

her indoors - Could you see me pushing a washing machine to your house on a skateboard? It might be a tad too far away.

Camie - That is an impressive list! We got an antique dresser from the garbage, too, and Hubby has been promising to refinish it for about 3 years now. As soon as we get some extra $$, I plan I buying a new sofa, too. Ours are SO lumpy, and worn out that when we put them on the curb, NOBODY will pick them up. That's pretty bad.

Gardenia said...

Don't feel bad - my stressed out thing is wearing two different shoes. Just act nonchalant - I liked that - "out of the box."

The less classy people here in this town were garbage pickers too - as I grew up I thought that's what everyone did - it was a family out to go to the dump and scrounge. Looking back, I think more people should do this type of recycling. Every little bit helps the environment. Also I would love to thumb my nose at the economy trap that keeps us buying, buying, buying!

Biddie said...

Gardenia - I haven't actually gone to the dump in years, but I do like checking out what's happening on garbage night.
I have an aunt in Nova Scotia, and she tells me that her town dump is the place to go. She actually found enough brand new flooring to redo her whole kitchen. Our society has been become too disposable.
I saw a blurb on TV about a guy that goes dumpster diving at the supermarket. he got fruit, veggies, and meat, still shrink wrapped. I don't know if I'm ready for THAT, but it did pique my interest. (He's not homeless, he has a mortgage, and can afford to pay it by eating this way).

#2 is some pretty bad fathering.

Biddie said...

Frank - I'm afraid that I gave you the wrong idea about my dad. He was a very good father, he raised 2 kids on his own in the 70's. I think that it was just a different time then, and the singles really were swinging. Like I said, I never knew that they were dating at the time, and my dad never brought ANY of his dates home to meet us. he was s great dad, and I wouldn't want anyone to think any less of him.
Thanks for stopping by, come again anytime! :)

you may be too honest for your own good!

What's wrong with picking up a washer that someone couldn't deal with a button missing? Silly for them to throw it out if you ask me! :)

Your dad sounds like he was a wonderful father. . .The teacher was the one at fault. People forget that teachers are just people too. :)

What's wrong with having a made up boyfriend. . .Don't we all have some sort of imaginary friend?

LOL on Heidi and Jethro. . .At least they know you completely and can talk to you about anything!

Wow on the pants thing! You should have told them that they were made like that - who would have known? I have seen a lot of kids wearing shirts inside out - why not pants? :)

Heidi the Hick said...

I think Shauna there has it all figured out.

Biddie said...

Dilling - Maybe..

Shauna - I think that you're right on! I love my extra capacity washing machine, and I am cheap, so, it was the perfect deal for me! As for wearing my pants inside out, they were uniform pants, so, it was a little obvious. I could have died, I was so embarrassed. Truth is, I was so sick that day, that I'm surprised that I even made it out the door at all.

My mother worked at grocery store years ago - stuff that was past sell date was free for employees or non-profits who wanted to pick it up - was great! Then they started pouring gallons of milk down the floor drains, and locking dumpsters - my husband cuts meat, he always keeps an eye out for the mark downs - that's what we eat at home - when I'm eating meat and not on the vegan thing.

I have a Shirley Temple doll buggy I found in a trash pile - I should get on ebay or somewhere and find out what that's worth!

Michael Colvin said...

I wore my jumper to work inside out once. But I had been clubbing to 4am so I had an excuse. Everyone laughed at me so I wore it like that all day just to spite them. :)

Cindy - Of course I missed you! Hope you had a great time away.
